PLANNING FOR ANIMALS IN DISASTERS
Since the devastating events of Katrina and Rita, we have learned the importance of including animals in disaster planning. We know that if we fail to include them, our pets will die unnecessarily, and so will their owners who choose to remain with them. It is no longer a moral decision to include pets in our plans, but a legal requirement under the Pets Act of 2006. But how do you include pets in your emergency management plans? What are the operational logistics involved in evacuation, rescue and sheltering of animals during a disaster?

Emergency Management Professionals is an active member of Pets America, a non profit organization that advocates for and educates about animal disaster preparedness and planning. We promote training for lay persons in disaster preparedness with courses in Pet CPR, First Aid, and Disaster Planning. We work with first responders and emergency managers to assist them in developing disaster plans which include animals, and offer training in evacuation and shelter management of pets.
It is every pet owner's responsibility to have a plan for their animal in the event of a disaster. But too often, people fail to plan. Our disaster preparedness course teaches owner how to prepare for evacuating with their animals, examines considerations when traveling with their pets, and shows how to safely provide for their animals in "pet friendly" shelters.

Pet First Aid and CPR classes are affordable, fun, and can save your pets life! We cover accidents, environmental injuries, medical illnesses, healthy pet habits and pet safety. From nose to tail, we teach you the basics of pet first aid and CPR in a non stressful environment.

FIRST RESPONDERS AND EMERGENCY MANAGERS DISASTER COURSES

To assist first responders, we offer courses in rescue and evacuation principles. Our training can help emergency managers develop better planning processes which include animals. The course also introduces the Animal Incident Management Team concept which works with the Unified Command structure in ICS to manage the operational logistics associated with animal response.
