Whether you have to evacuate in a disaster, or decide to shelter in place, you need to plan ahead for the best and safest outcome. We can help develop your evacuation plans, and give guidance on the best strategies to shelter in place.
If you had to evacuate your community of facility, would you be prepared? How many people can you expect to shelter? How many will evacuate? Do you have the resources and knowledge needed to manage a large scale evacuation in your community?
SHELTER OPERATIONS AND MANAGEMENT
Responsible for developing the shelter plans for your community? Or would you like to know how to set and operate a disaster shelter? Too often, it is just assumed that the Red Cross will be ready and able to set up shelters anywhere or at any time. But what if you need to shelter people before the Red Cross arrived. Or what if the event was so catastrophic that the Red Cross was overwhelmed?
We can provide guidance on how to establish and manage a disaster shelter. We have worked with counties, cities and states to develop their shelter guidance documents and provide shelter management training.
MEDICAL SPECIAL NEEDS SUPPORT SERVICES
When disasters strike, it is the vulnerable populations in our communities that suffer the most. Those individuals with medical special needs, mobility and cognitive disabilities, the elderly, and the transient populations all may require additional assistance or services. And yet studies show that most cities and states are not adequately prepared to meet the special needs of these individuals.
We offer specialized training and consultation to help communities and agencies plan and respond to the needs of the vulnerable populations within their service area. We are highly committed to the inclusiveness of functional needs populations in disaster planning. For sheltering of medical special needs individuals, we advocate the model developed by the Baptist Child and Family Services, the lead agency in the state of Texas for medical special needs sheltering, who has just been tapped by FEMA to develop the national Standard Operating Procedures for functional needs support services. This "Best Practice" system will serve as the national model. BCFS has been recognized as the premier organization for caring for medically fragile individuals during disasters.
